It’s one thing for a cardboard box to be infused with seeds and designed for planting at the end of its useful life. It’s quite another, however, to see a similar concept in something made from plastic. However, it’s no ordinary plastic used in Equilicuá’s Spud Raincoat — rather, the PVC alternative is made from potato starch and fully biodegradable, compostable and suitable for planting. In preparation for the Olympic Games in 2012, a 20-foot tall mountain of discarded fridges was removed from Hackney in East London in 2005. While many residents were glad to be rid of what they considered an eye-sore, others in the community felt they had lost a cultural landmark, and decided to commemorate the fridge mountain through the Films on Fridges project — using abandoned refrigerators to create an interactive pop-up outdoor cinema. Those of you who remember our article on A.P.C’s Butler Jeans service will already be familiar with the concept of trading in old clothes for stylish new garments. Applying that model to bridesmaid and prom dresses, we recently discovered Newly Maid.
Old dresses are exchanged for points which can be put towards the purchase of a little black dress available in six different styles. The old dresses, meanwhile, are either broken down and recycled for use in future Newly Maid dress designs, or donated to charities where they are needed.
